Medical coding Every time a patient receives professional health care in a physician’s office, hospital outpatient facility or ambulatory surgical center (ASC), the provider must document the services provided. The medical coder will abstract the information from the documentation, assign the appropriate codes, and create a claim to be paid, whether by a commercial payer, the patient, or CMS.

Medical Coding is the process of converting diagnosis codes to ICD-9 codes and procedure codes to CPT codes. It also involves HCPC (pronounced Hick-pick) codes that identified supplies and drugs for correct billing. Modifiers are used to support and additional services or procedures that is rendered to received additional reimbursement for services.

Medical Billing is the process of billing insurance carriers and understanding the insurance terminology for filing and appealing claims. An insurance claim starts when a patient has contact with a health care provider and ends when you receive a payment from the patient or insurance carrier.

What will I learn from this class?

You will learn about ICD-9-CM & ICD-10-CM (diagnosis codes) and CPT (procedure codes) as well as insurance companies and reimbursements will be covered; eg, Medicare, Medicaid, HMO’s, Blue Cross, Work Comp, etc. We will also cover modifiers, HCPCS codes, HIPAA, Compliance, CMS-1500, Rule/Regulations and other aspects of the billing field.
